Experimental studies performed on BLORANGEX demonstrate that, thanks its the presence of antioxidant biocompounds, the extract exerts an anti-inflammatory function. The extract is also able to decrease the accumulation of fat in human liver cells (HepG2) treated with FFA, used as a model of hepatic steatosis. Furthermore, studies conducted on a red orange extract demonstrate that it is able to reduce solar erythema caused by exposure to UV-B radiation.

Description

Botanical name: Citrus Sinensis L. Osbeck

Origin: Italy, Sicily

Appearance: red powder

BLORANGEX  is obtained from three varieties of sicilian blood oranges: Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello. These orange varieties grow in Italy, in particular in the eastern part of Sicily, where the pedoclimatic conditions and the presence of  the volcano Etna , makes it particularly suitable for their cultivation.

The feature of red oranges is the presence of high amounts of anthocyanin, a family of antioxidant pigments that cannot be found in other citrus, responsible for the deep red hue of the fruit. Anthocyanins develop when citrus ripen during warm days tempered with cooler nights, acting as a fruit protective system against extreme climatic fluctuations that occur in Sicily’s Etna area.

Together with other flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids, anthocyanins represent the characteristic bioactive compounds of blood oranges. They are associated with antioxidant properties, prevention of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cancer. These biocompounds are also used in the treatment of capillary fragility and other diseases, whose etiology is attributable to the destructive action of free radicals. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that a standardized extract of blood oranges, rich in anthocyanins, is able to increase the antioxidant defenses in humans affected by diabetes, smokers and in those subjects who practice competitive sports.

The extract is standardized in anthocyanins and flavanones

BIOACTIVITY

The three varieties of blood oranges, namely Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello, are particularly rich in anthocyanins. Ten different molecules have been identified in blood oranges, seven of which are derivatives of cyanidin and three derivatives of delphinidin. Among them, the most representative are cyanidin-3- glucoside and cyanidin-3- 6 ”-malonylglucoside. They act synergistically with the glycoside flavanones (hesperidin, narirutin and didymine), hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, coumaric, ferulic and synapic) and vitamin C, and play a key role in the protection of our body from the effects of free radicals, which are the cause of degenerative diseases and skin aging.

The results show that the synergy between the bioactive compounds of the extract,  flavonoids, anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, exerts a strong activity against free radicals. The extract acts also as anti-inflammatory, increasing the levels of OH-1.

The experimental work has been conducted on human volounteers exposed to solar radiations. It has been demonstrated that, using a formulation containing a red orange extract as post-treatment to sun exposure, it is able to reduce the extent of erythema caused by UV-B radiation.

The Red Orange Extract protective effects appear greater than another natural antioxidant (Tocopherol) commonly employed in cosmetic formulations.

This suggests the use of the extract as anti-photoageing and after-sun cosmetic product.

Typical trend of erythema index variation (∆EI) vs time. ROE or TOC solutions were applied to skin sites immediately after exposure to UV-B radiations
